The concept of fallen women is often a time used to refer to a woman who has lost her innocence, her chastity. It was believed that to be socially and morally acceptable a woman’s sexuality should be entirely restricted to marriage and that women should be always under the supervision of men. The idea of Eve, as the prototypical fallen woman has been widely accepted by academics, theologians and literary scholars. Eve was not expelled from Eden because of any sort of sexuality outside marriage, but her fall was from a state of innocence because she ate forbidden fruit from the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Although not in the biblical story but the term “fallen”” was nevertheless most often conflated with sexual knowledge particularly for women at a time when the social value of their sexual inexperience was insisted upon.
