CassowaryThe southern cassowary is one of Australia’s most imposing birds – Big, colourful, and flightless. It is found only in the dense tropical rainforests of north-east Queensland. (The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, 1999). As stated in (Department of the Environment and Heritage, 2004). Some people have made nurseries and have aimed to restore rainforest on cleared land and link remaining vegetation. Aiming to bring back some of the population of cassowaries before they come extinct.As stated in (national geographic S.A.,2013) a cassowary is one of the biggest birds in the world a full-grown male can weigh 160 pounds only ostriches are bigger birds, which made them huge targets for European settlers when they came to Australia. Though cassowary numbers were already on decline due to the European settlers, and they are being protected, Vehicles, dog attacks, human interactions, pigs and disease have also affected the cassowary’s numbers to perhaps as few as around 2000, threatening the species with extinction, (Queensland government, 2017)Though the cassowary is now very rare it has still got a big asset, its colours. If you are running through a vibrant rainforest with colourful flowers and odd leaves you are lucky to be able to see one, this is also a problem to people who are going on a day trip as it doesn’t like movement. When it sees someone move it runs at the poor creature who moved and slices its chest open then jumps on the body till it thinks that it is dead. (San Diego zoo, 2019)If you live near cassowary territory, you should follow these easy steps:• Leave land on your property that cassowaries can live where which has lots of trees and vegetation.• When you see one when you are driving be careful and slow down but don’t stop as you pass.• When cassowaries are near make a special effort to keep your dog away, hold its leash or tie it down.• Don’t feed them, if you see one on the side of the road leave it will then have less of a chance to get hit.• Don’t ever feed them. If you do, they will think that humans are the only source of food and start looking for themselves, if you don’t feed them after they will starve and they will get very sick and most likely die, It may also make them attack others.• Plant food plants for them that they enjoy eating. There are professionals who can give advice about things like that(Queensland government, 2017)Though the cassowary is almost extinct I think that if they are given proper care and love they can repopulate and start to be found more commonly in the wild with its friend the emu, it doesn’t have to be extinct but it will become it if it is not cared for, plant trees it can eat though if you do look out for it as you don’t want to get hurt, and stop chopping down forests build paths between existing forests, and look after your local community. There are easy steps to do so follow them, and if you see a cassowary don’t stop to say hello. Remember they may be beautiful, but they aren’t very friendly when you move.
