Helping from the Other Side

In today’s world society ask adolescents from a young age what they strive to be when they grow up. This leads to kids dreaming to be unique things such as princesses, astronauts, actresses and other things that adults hear them say and may think is not realistic or difficult to achieve. Growing up, I had a unconditional love for any type of animal so when I was asked this it was not questionable that I wanted to be a Veterinarian. The idea that I could be the individual that helps curing sick animals, that may be a huge asset to someone’s life, gave me a feeling of gratification. What I did not realize as a little girl that sees the good in everything is that this occupation would have certain requirements such as putting animals to sleep, giving them shots and many other difficult tasks that I would not be able to emotionally handle. When it came time for me to choose my major, many factors went into how I decided what I would want to do for the rest of my life. I always knew from a young age that I wanted to help others in my everyday job but did not want to deal with the intensity of what doctors, nurses and others have to deal with, considering I would become emotionally involved. With this in mind I came across a major known as Health Services Management. These individuals plan, direct, and coordinate medical and health services. They also manage the facilities or oversee departments such as nursing, surgery or physical therapy. Qualities that are needed to be a successful health service manager are leadership, organization and communication skills, all in which I feel are my strongest traits. I knew this was my calling because instead of having to complete the difficult tasks of helping others, I would be in charge of the individuals doing these tasks and make sure they are successfully completing their duties. In order to effectively do this, I will have to obtain my bachelor’s degree as well as my masters and make sure I have as much experience needed. This would also still give me the satisfaction that I am helping others in a positive way. I cannot wait to utilize my occupation to make an impact on people’s everyday lives.
