The Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a privately owned, 777 bed teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School and a general medical and surgical facility run by the president Elizabeth G. Nabel (Brigham, 2019). They are ranked No. 20 on the Best Hospital Honor Roll and they operate out of Boston, Massachusetts (Brigham, 2019). They are also nationally ranked in 9 adult specialties and rated high performing in 3 adult specialties and 8 procedures and conditions (Brigham, 2019). They’re ranked on patient experience with an average of 4 out of 5 stars according to the hospital’s website (Brigham, 2019).Guided by their vision of delivering better healthcare to the world, they use their mission statement of maintaining and restoring health through leadership in compassionate care, scientific discoveries and education (Brigham, 2019) to maintain their prominent stance on quality healthcare. Brigham Hospital stands tall on their values and what they represent, so to deliver their message to patients and families effectively Brigham uses five elements: improve health, provide timely access, deliver an exceptional patient service experience, provide the highest-quality and safe care, and deliver care at the lowest possible cost (Brigham, 2019). There are many care affiliations connected to Brigham listed on their website that they offer services to such as The Cancer Center, Heart and Vascular Center, The Lung Center, and the Women’s Health Center (Brigham, 2019) among many others. Brigham offers many services to patients such as Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pathology, Pediatric Newborn Medicine, and Radiation Oncology (Brigham, 2019).One prominent venture that Brigham collaborates with is Partners Healthcare. Partners Healthcare mission is focused mainly on delivering Innovation. Innovation supports the research requirements of its 6,200 Harvard Medical School faculty and research hospitals (Partners Healthcare). It has responsibility for industry collaborations, venture investing, international consulting, licensing, innovation management, company creation, technology marketing, open innovation alliances, and workforce development (Partners Healthcare).One program that Partners Healthcare assists with that I personally see is a start of a new trend would be Brigham’s home hospital program. It is covered by grants and funding from Partners. This program encourages selected acutely ill emergency department patients who are stable and don’t need intensive, round the clock care to opt for hospital-level care at home (Andrews, 2018). This particular program could also help eliminate overcrowding in hospitals where there is no real emergency that doesn’t require a hospital stay. Also, it would be beneficial for the elderly who have a hard time getting around and traveling. The program could also be a good way for people not to have to wait around for open appointments and may need just an extra care in their time of need. As a top recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health Brigham receives an annual research budget of more than $485 million (Partners Healthcare, 2018). Brigham has been one of the two hospitals receiving the most National Institutes of Health funding among the independent hospital in the United States (Partners Healthcare, 2018). The annual funding helps keep their facility up and running and keeps them in the running to remain to be internationally known for its clinical, translational bench, and population-based research studies including the Nurses’ Health Study, Physicians Study, and the Women’s Health Initiative (Partners Healthcare, 2018). Although Brigham receives funding it did not stop them from falling short of financial shortcomings. At one point, a record fall hit Boston and halted admissions for an entire month. The installation of a $400 million electronic health record system had experienced a fall off in-patient volume, and the hospital lost $24 million as well as preparing for a threatened nurses strike (Winslow, 2017). Even though they’ve had to make some costs cut over the years, Brigham brings in on average 2.7 billion in revenue, and they expect a return on the recently opened $600 million Building for Transformative medicine (Winslow, 2017).Over the years Brigham Hospital has obtained some of the most prestigious awards for Hospital Quality and Specialty Clinical Quality. Some of those awards are the Outstanding Patient Experience Award, America’s 100 Best hospitals for General Surgery Award, Gastrointestinal Care, and Pulmonary Care, and the Cranial Neurosurgery Excellence Award (Health Grades, 2018). All these awards span over the years from 2016-2019 and I’m sure Brigham Hospital will achieve many more awards and continue to grow as a top hospital in the nation.In conclusion Brigham Hospital is overall one of the most top-rated hospitals because they are breaking barriers and taking risks in patient healthcare and technology to continue to grow their brand. Brigham shows that they are not afraid to venture out and try new things to enhance their already excellent healthcare system. Receiving funding to help assist with their research and implementing their tactics on how to cut costs, produce quality, safety, and over-all an excellent patient experience will keep this hospital in the fore front for many, many years to come.
