AdventHealth is a nonprofit healthcare organization present in nine different states, with 130 facilities including hospital campuses, urgent-care centers, home health and hospice agencies, and nursing homes. AdventHealth strives to give their patients and the community the best possible care which is evident in their mission and vision statements, values, services, and community presence. This agency maintains a positive culture by employing individuals that ingrain the mission and vision in their behavior and actions. This is the organization I see myself joining once I complete my master’s in health administration. Although AdventHealth has multiple locations, I hope to join one of the hospital campuses in Central Florida. AdventHealth was officially founded in 1973 by individuals who believed it was equally important to not only treat diseases, but to also prevent them. The founders wanted to heal the mind and raise spirits, in addition to treating the body. This is currently portrayed in the company’s mission and vision statements. AdventHealth’s mission statement is, “Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ” (“AdventHealth’s History and Mission,” n.d.). The organization’s website further explains that health should be measured in terms of the whole person- body, mind and spirit. The goal and promise to each individual they serve is to assist in making them feel whole through compassionate care and exceptional expertise. Some healthcare organizations do not necessarily worry about the patient’s mental, emotional, and spiritual needs; however, these aspects are just as significant as their physical wellbeing. The vision AdventHealth has established is the following: wholisitic care to help you feel whole, exceptional care at every step, connecting you to the care you need, dedicated to delivering access to affordable care, and innovative, viable care that adapts to your needs. Each of these items should be achieved in the future, to benefit patients and the community. “Guided by our value of stewardship, we ensure that our care is both efficient today and sustainable for tomorrow” (“Who We Are,” n.d.). Although many of these items may be included when reviewing other healthcare organizations visions, AdventHealth differs as Christ’s healing continues to be the focal point. Quality and service excellence, community and wellbeing, high ethical standards, stewardship, and inclusiveness are the values AdventHealth has established. Members should exemplify each of these when completing day to day activities at every location. The agency strives to utilize these values when hiring individuals, completing performance reviews, receiving promotions, and giving incentives. One reason AdventHealth is successful is due to the way they have ingrained their values into the foundation of the culture. Although the organization’s strategies may change over time, their values have stayed constant. AdventHealth offers many conveniences for their patients. The eCare Application is a great example of this. This application is used to partake in an online appointment with an AdventHealth physician or nurse practitioner from the convenience of your home or any other location, for most minor health problems. It is available on your smartphone or tablet and covered by some insurance plans. If one does not have insurance or the appointment is not covered, it is $49.00 per visit. The appointments can be scheduled on the weekends or during the week, when most primary care offices are closed. This is convenient for working individuals, people that may be out of town, or someone that is unable to leave their home. In Florida, the service is available at any time Monday through Friday, however other states vary and the appointments are only available on weekdays from 8:00am to 8:00pm and on weekends 8:00am to 5:00pm. This agency wants their patients to receive the best care, whenever they may need it. The Hellowell Application is also a service AdventHealth provides. This application is used to view lab results or health records, pay bills, schedule appointments, request prescription refills, or message your care team. It is imperative that healthcare organizations transition into offering their services through a smartphone app, such as AdventHealth. Most individuals rely on smartphones for more than texting and making phone calls, they take these devices everywhere with them and use them to complete multiple tasks, therefore healthcare organizations must learn to adapt. In addition to the eCare and Hellowell applications, AdventHealth assists in publishing books and resources to assist in sustaining a healthy mind, body, and spirit. These books and resources contribute in helping people live happy lives by using the eight ideologies in the CREATION life acronym- Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal relationships, Outlook, and Nutrition. AdventHealth Press has items for employees, patients, and the community. AdventHealth has a strong community presence through social media and also events they organize. They frequently post blogs and other items on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram. The organization is most active on Facebook where they share success stories, motivational posts, events, and links to their blog which disclose tips for the community. Some of the tips shared include: “Healthy ways to ease your kids into their new school schedules,” “sunscreen best practices for healthy, radiant skin,” “summer skin conditions: most common bites, rashes and stings,” and “advice for caregivers to care for themselves” (“AdventHealth,” n.d.) It is valuable for AdventHealth to have such a strong social media presence, as most people spend copious time checking their social media accounts. By AdventHealth posting these tips, success stories, and other items, it may inform the community on things they may not have known otherwise. The agency also hosts many events to get the community involved. For example, on May 21, 2019 and May 23, 2019, the organization hosted an event at the Daytona International Speedway to provide free sports physicals to the community. Free transportation was provided for each school in Volusia County. In addition to the free sports physicals, the kids could partake in a virtual race day experience, giveaways, and other activities. Another event that AdventHealth organizes is Tee it up Fore Cancer. This free charity event is to help bring awareness and support to AdventHealth Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Care Fund. “Your swing and commitment to the game will bring hope and healing to patients and their families battling breast cancer in Central Florida” (“COMMUNITY EVENT: Tee it Up Fore Cancer,” n.d.). It does not matter what skill level one is at when playing golf, everyone is encouraged to participate. A final event the organization arranges in Central Florida is the EnduRUNce 5k. This activity was created to bring awareness and to support children and families that are living with a terminal or chronic illness. The events AdventHealth hosts help bring attention to the community, by showing many issues people experience daily. After reaching out to a Clinical Informatics Physician Liaison at AdventHealth, who works at the New Smyrna, Deland, and Daytona Beach hospital locations, I was given further information regarding training, team building activities, and team meetings. She advised AdventHealth holds monthly trainings for nurses and providers to keep their skills up to practice to provide the best care for the patients. This is a great way to ensure employees are performing to their highest standards and a time for members to receive additional guidance, if necessary. In regards to team building activities, the organization hosts off-site quarterly meetings for each region. They collaborate on issues for the first half of the meeting and the second half is an off-site lunch for team bonding. The director values working together and building a strong team. Her team in particular has a meeting every Monday to discuss updates, goals for the week, and items the team should improve on. Regional meetings are held every quarter. They also partake in daily safety rounds at the hospital where a team member reports back to the rest of the team what is occurring within the hospital. Her leaders often state, “It’s easy to get good players. Getting them to play together, that’s the hard part.” This is vital in the healthcare industry. If an organization does not work well as a team, they will not excel. To be successful at AdventHealth, one needs to have a positive attitude, be a team player, and always put the patient first, by extending the healing ministry of Christ. Community outreach is also an enormous value to AdventHealth. Being involved in the community would allow one to smoothly transition into this organization. AdventHealth strives to extend the healing ministry of Christ to the patients and beyond the walls to the community. The values this organization has are extremely important. One must demonstrate quality and service excellence, community and wellbeing, high ethical standards, stewardship, and inclusiveness. If an individual hoping to become employed at AdventHealth does not display these qualities, they may not be offered the job. The agency portrays a faith-based culture of excellence that separates them from other healthcare industries. The Orlando location was recently named the number one hospital in Florida and is also nationally ranked in seven specialties by U.S. News & World Report. Without strong healthcare professionals that epitomize the organization’s mission, vision, and value statements, they may not have received that ranking. In conclusion, AdventHealth possesses many great qualities that make their healthcare organization successful. They continuously ensure the patient and community are top priorities, while focusing on wholistic care. Similar to how Christ healed individuals in His earthly ministry, they want to provide care as a whole that fulfills one’s body, mind, and spirit. The agency portrays this in their mission and vision statements, values, services, and community presence. AdventHealth wants to employ individuals that will be a great representation of the company and what it stands for. To become employed at this organization, I think it is important to participate in community activities to get involved. Whether it’s activities that AdventHealth hosts or other events that occur. Taking part in or volunteering for community activities can not only make an impact on your life professionally, but also personally. It is also important to attend networking events and apply for internships and fellowships that AdventHealth has to offer. Finally, having a positive attitude and being a team player are vital not only at AdventHealth, but in all healthcare organizations. Hospitals usually have a melancholy connotation; therefore, a positive attitude is essential. You have the potential to change someone’s day by a simple smile or act of kindness. Being a team player is equally important. A team can consist of the most talented individuals, but if they are unwilling to work together, they will not succeed. No matter how strong and solid one brick is, one brick can never make a wall. Overall, AdventHealth is an organization built on strong values and strives each day to be better than they were the day before. It would be a great privilege to work for this organization.
